C-table

Its whole premise is a base that slides under the frame. On a chaise or an armless module there is nothing to slide under that puts it within reach.

An arm-height mismatch of more than 1.5 inches makes it sit awkwardly. And it needs an end to stand at.

The built-in console solves one seat.

  • A wide pit sectional is eight modules and two arms

    Two wide end seats, two wide armless seats, two corner seats and two corner ottomans. Six of those eight have no arm to put anything on.

  • The centre console is one seat wide

    Ashley’s six-piece reclining sectional puts a console with two holders between two seats. Useful if you are in one of those two.

  • Arm trays need a flat arm

    The IKEA RÖDEBY armrest tray fits flat armrests 4 to 12 inches wide, and is not made for rounded ones. A Lovesac Sactionals armrest is rolled.

  • And the chaise is 61 inches deep

    The Burrow Nomad chaise sectional lists a 61-inch chaise depth against a 36-inch sofa depth. Sitting back on that puts you two feet from anything at the end.

—Does it actually work

It wobbles. Then it settles.

Somebody sits down beside it, or a dog lands on the cushion, and the drink comes back level. The base is 5.2 inches across and spreads the load instead of balancing on a point.

Width, and nothing else.

The base

5.2 inches across and fixed. It moves the edge the drink would have to tip over much farther out, so the whole thing has to lean much farther before it goes.

The fins

Six of them, holding the bottom inch. Cans and bottles slide on from the top; tumblers and glasses drop in. Drink and base then rock as one piece.

The cushion

A wide foot spreads the weight across the upholstery instead of pressing into it at a point. It marks nothing and lifts away clean.

—What seats and what does not

Bases between two and three inches. Measure the bottom, not the rim.

A standard 12 oz can is 2.6 inches across the bottom. A Stanley Quencher 40 oz is 3.1 and seats snug. A mug with a handle does not seat at all — the handle lands exactly where the fins grip, and that is a straight no.

The three seats the furniture industry cannot reach are the three seats people fight over. Those are where these live. The ottoman top and the console lid work too, and so does the flat arm — but the arm already had an answer.

—Questions

Straight answers.

Will it actually stand on a cushion?

Yes — that is the surface it was designed for. The base is 5.2 inches across and fixed, so it spreads across the foam instead of pressing into it at a point, and the drink and the base then move as one piece when the cushion re-shapes.

What about the corner seat?

The corner is the seat with no arm, no floor beside it and nothing in front but a reach you cannot make. It is the reason this page exists. Two of the four reviews above are people describing exactly that seat.

Does it work on the ottoman?

Yes, and on a console lid. Anything flat and level. On a hard wooden top use a coaster under it the way you would under a glass — the Steadi does not insulate, so condensation still runs.

My arm is rolled. Is that why the tray didn’t work?

Almost certainly. Trays are rated by armrest width, and rolled arms fail on flatness. A Lovesac rolled arm measures the same 6 inches through as the standard one; it just curves, so nothing rigid sits level on it.

Will it hold a 40 oz Stanley?

Yes. The Quencher H2.0 40 oz measures about 3.1 inches at the base, inside the range the fins flex to. It is a snug fit rather than a drop-in — it seats with a push.

Will it mark the upholstery?

It marks nothing and lifts clean. There is no adhesive, no suction and no hardware. It is one piece of TPU standing on the fabric.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Yes. Shore 85A TPU, 100% BPA free. Rinse, wipe, or top rack.

How many do I need?

One per seat that gets used. Most households buy two or four. The four-pack works out at $9.99 each and colours are chosen per unit, which is how people stop mixing up whose drink is whose.

Won’t it look like a gadget on the couch?

It is a matte moulded base, 2.8 inches tall, in twelve colours including bone, oat, sage and charcoal. No branding anybody can read across a room. It reads as part of the drink, not part of the furniture.

My couch already has a console.

Then two seats are solved. The question is the other four — and whether the wells take the cup you actually drink from, which for a handled mug or a wine glass they do not.

I’ll just get a bigger coffee table.

Coffee tables are set 14 to 18 inches out from the cushion and 16 to 18 inches high, which is correct. On a 39- or 47-inch-deep seat, correct is still out of reach when you are lying back.

The seat with no table beside it is the seat everybody wants.
